This is the Man of the Hour! It took more than human courage for this patriarchal Vietnamese Archbishop to leave the tranquillity of retirement for the anguish and anxiety of fighting for the life of the Catholic Church.
The callous and cold fist of fanatics has already been felt - and no different from the enemies of his homeland who have already tempered this man's mettle. It does not take long for virtue and vice to part company. And as the Scriptures repeatedly remind us: by their fruits you shall know them.
In the winter of his long and fruitful life, Archbishop Thuc abandons himself to the providence of God and its urgings. He sets aside the comfort and peace which human prudence would advise and sets forth into the battle. Those who have the faith will follow him and welcome his heroic deed; those who use the faith for their own glory will surely curse him bitterly.
Archbishop Thuc is not the senile, rice-paddy prelate some might want to imagine. He is a man of great learning and versatile experience. He holds a doctorate in philosophy, a doctorate in theology, and a doctorate in Church Law. Obviously, here's a man who needs no help from an unlicensed practitioner in these fields. Nor is he a man in need of 'apologists' to glorify him. He is not a cultfigure.His Excellency has been a man of great apostolic acheivement in his homeland of Vietnam. A Bishop at 41 - a very rare occurence in those early days - he organized his diocese and established a seminary. Later, he founded and built the University of Dalat which became the best in all of Vietnam.
A victim of Paul VI's impatient policy of eliminating opposition to his rapprochement with Communism, Archbishop Thuc was forced into retirement at the age of 73. In his place was appointed Ost-politiker Msgr. Philip Nguyen Kim Dien, spiritual son of John Paul II. With full knowledge of the displeasure and attacks he would incur for his stance in defending the Catholic Church, Archbishop Thuc has taken action in a practical and realistic manner. We ask all our readers to pray for this courageous prelate and those whom he has consecrated for the service of the Church.
